SwingTime 1 with Michael Kanan

This course will be an introduction to the world of jazz singing. We will examine basic aspects of this art form, including rhythm, syncopation, the swing “feel”, lyric interpretation in this genre, and improvisation. We will discuss what makes jazz different from other genres that draw from the Great American Songbook (like cabaret and musical theater). We will watch some videos of the great masters (Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald etc) and each week you will sing a different song for the class, with an emphasis on learning a particular aspect of the style. The class will try to expose you to this incredible music in a supportive and fun environment.

Requirements: you should have at least a few Standards that you are able to sing by memory. You will be asked to sing something in the first class. You should also have iReal Pro for accompaniment (we won’t always use this) and some kind of small speaker to amplify it so that the class can hear both you and your backing track.

Michael Kanan is a professional jazz pianist living in New York. He has 30 years of experience with a special focus on vocal accompaniment. He has performed and recorded with Jane Monheit, Jimmy Scott, Annie Ross, Gabrielle Stravelli and many more.
