Week 1: Fascinating Rhythm

Rhythm is so important. Learning rhythms correctly the first time can save hours in the practice room. In this course, we will use the works of George Gershwin as our main source material. We will examine and sight-read the rhythms of his melodies and piano parts. We will also pick sections to sight-read melodically. Other activities will include transcription, rhythm composition and performing 2-part rhythm compositions to develop independence.

Goal: Read rhythms fluently; speak rhythms while tapping an ostinato; tap two different rhythms at the same time. Sight-read melodies that move by step in major and minor.

Material: Works of Gershwin and other examples.

Week 2: The Sound of Music

Teach yourself new melodies directly from sheet music! Learn to read all of the notes on the treble and bass clefs. In this intense 1-week session we will use the music of Richard Rodgers and, well, anyone as source material for reading at the keyboard and singing. Activities will also include: transcription, melody composition, singing melodies while playing bass notes. Thanks to online piano simulators, you do not need a keyboard to take this class.

Goal: Read all pitches on treble and bass clef. Know location of all notes on a keyboard (possibly guitar/uke, too if interest is there). Major and Minor Key signatures. Sight-singing melodies that use steps. Sight-singing step-wise melodies over bass notes.

Material: Works of Rodgers & Anyone

Week 3: Ticket to Ride

Get ready to prepare your own charts. You don't even need to be able to read music to perform this task! But let's not stop there. Using the songs of Lennon & McCartney we will examine (and transpose) the chord progressions of some of their iconic songs. We will also try our hand at some chord voicings that are easy to execute on the piano and apply to other pieces.

Goal: Identify Intervals and apply to chord construction (triads, seventh chords, slash chords, inversions). Learn transposition tips and chart-writing essentials. Learn simplified piano voicings for common progressions.

Material: Lennon & McCartney and other examples
