Music Literacy 101

Do you wish you could look at new sheet music and hear the melody in your head? Do you compose music but struggle to transcribe it? These skills are not just for the chosen few. Music literacy is a fundamental human right and can be attained by anyone willing to put in the effort. In this 4-week intro course we will draw on the methodology of Zoltán Kodály and the research of Edwin Gordon as we sing a variety of folk musics from different cultures. Through participation in music-making, we will experience the music kinesthetically, aurally, orally, and visually as we move to, listen to, discuss, and look at different ways of showing intervals, melodic patterns, and rhythms.

Course Goals: to master reading, writing, and improvising with do and la pentatonic melodies in several keys; and to master reading, writing, and improvising with basic rhythms in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 6/8 time signatures. Do not expect to sit and take notes! This is not a boring theory course. Each session will include movement games, group work, part work, sight-singing, improvisation, and tons of creative fun.
