Breaking the Mold: How to Make the Song Your Own with Nikki M. James
Are you looking to solidify your approach to acting through song? Do you have a stand-by audition piece that could use a tune-up? Do you want to bring more of yourself into your performances? Maybe you love a song, but you don't think it is "for you?"
Every performer is unique, so every performance should be unique. The class, led by Tony Award Winner Nikki M James, is geared toward musical theater performers. Nikki will teach artists how to approach any song and make it their own. Through instruction, song breakdown, and (some!) homework, students will discover new ways to unlock their imagination and creativity.
The course will meet two days a week for two consecutive weeks. In week one, the entire class will break down an assigned song as a group. Yes, we'll all do the same piece, but we will each discover a singular interpretation. In week two, performers will work through a song of their choice, culminating with an in-class performance. We'll find that by bringing our unique selves, no song is out of our reach.
Nikki M James won a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2011 for The Book of Mormon. She began performing professionally as a teen and made her Broadway debut at the age of 19. Her wide-ranging resume includes classical theater, contemporary plays, MANY musicals, plus television and film. She's very excited to help aspiring performers realize their unique voices.
